Log Splitter

We've been planning on building one of these for years but this one showed up on CL for 100.00 delivered and couldn't pass it up. It already has a lot of steel in it, a bulldozer ram, a controller and axle, good bones to start with. We're gonna start stripping it down and make it hook to a tractor. Dad and I always spit with an axe, it's good exercise and good for us, but when we have to get out wedges we'll get this out instead.

Flip it over and mount it to forks, hook it up to mellow yellows hydro, drop down on the log and pull the trigger. :bliss

That honker must weigh a ton, literally. Lots of potential there for sure and it'll beat the heck out of driving wedges!

Good idea GT but the wood resides at the farm. We cut a year ahead or more and store it in a barn over there, cut split, stacked, and done. We just move enough of what we cut last year or before for the Winter and put it in that little garage near the house. When wood burning starts, we have a wood closet in the house that will hold enough for a week and we refill it on the nicest day each week.

It does weigh a lot Major.

Well hooking to a 3 pt hitch on a large tractor with hydro is a good deal too. My issue is always lifting large pieces up on a horizontal splitter. Mine can go vertical so that helps but rolling them around takes time and back strain. Next best thing would be having it go all the way to the ground and roll em on. I have catchers on the sides of mine to do multiple splits without logs rolling off.

I got mine from Tractor Supply and added side catcher (OEM) its a 28 ton with Honda Engine.

After loading more wood up at the neighbors yesterday and tearing the arm up I loaded it on the trailer and headed to a friends welding shop down the road to get this thing done. He has a lot more nice equipment to use, and lets me have scrap pieces to build with.


Spent all afternoon down there yesterday and going back in a few minutes to finish up the metal work, hopefully it will be done by lunch. Ended up making a new custom axle for it and all. The guys at the welding shop say it should be about a 500 ton splitter. :rolling
