I have three Kohler k91 motors that all have missing or damaged/worn out parts and I am in the process of making one good running engine. the engines are all within 10 years of one another late 50s to late 60s.this is a photo of the engine that supplied the block.

the following photos show the engine in different stages of assembly. it is not yet completed but I wanted to share the pictures I had. I was able to do some horse trading with Geno and got a gas tank for the finished engine. this engine will have the attached gas tank. I plan to eventually put the engine on a second RJ. Here is what I have so far.

The most difficult part was cleaning the years of grime off the parts, the Kohler service manual makes this an easy task as all the tolerances and torque values are listed. I had to swap out the crank and piston rod as they were scored and crank would have to be turned under size and a new rod was needed. That is something I will do later and use those parts in a second engine. The valves were in good shape and still were with in wear limits. the valves in the K91 have no mechanical adjustment the stems are ground to acquire the correct lash. the only thing the cylinder needed was a honing to cross hatch the wall. I installed new coil, plug condenser and replaced the plug wire and wire to points and kill switch. Also replaced bearings and seals. the hardest part to locate was the timing marks on the cam and crank once located and gears line up its good to go.when I get the tank installed I will post photos of the completed project.

All done except for decals and a muffler. This is the best running Kohler I have , she started on the second pull and ran like a top.

Ok so help me out Motor.. I know very little about engines but I am slowly finding out I need to know a whole lot more.. So I apologize if this is a dumb question that I'm sure everyone else already knows but what is the lever on the L bracket for??

It seems that it is your throttle adjustment but if it is attached to what I think is the governor arm, how does that work? Do they move independently from one another? Im so :confused1 :rolling

Never any stupid questions, maybe a dumb answer once and awhile. The push pull knob on the base is the throttle. It is connected to the governor that is spring actuated, the long arm that extends up from the governor rod has linkage that is connected to the carburetor. It's kinda hard to explain, but the governor arm moves first then the butterfly on the carb follows. Its a very simple set up, and works great.
