RJ58 transmission was created by motor12
My RJ58 has a noisy trans, guess I'll have to live with it. I rebuilt the trans put in all new bearings, bushings, seals and gaskets. I replaced the idler pulley with a new one and run a 85wt to120wt gear oil. All works fine, very smooth but noisy.

1958/model RJ58
1964/model 854

I haven't been in one of those but it sounds like a shimming issue to me.

Can't believe I missed this post Motor. My 3 piece 5010 also has gear noise which I attribute to the straight cut gears, just like most of the older transmissions (easier to manufacture). Actually I think the "whine" kind of :cool

Go figure, my '58 is a bit noisy as well, however the much less expensive ball of rust aka 1960 Suburban, is as quiet as a church mouse.
